First establish whether the game crashes before the menu or only while loading a save. Back up saves, record the installed build, disable third-party mods for a controlled test, and verify files. A current Steam discussion reports mixed results from renaming one game-local Steam.dll; it is not an official universal fix.
Create a clean comparison
- Record the storefront, Windows version, GPU and driver, full game build and exact crash stage.
- Protect your original saves before testing.
- Disable mods through their documented manager or installation instructions. Keep their files and configuration recoverable.
- Use the storefront verification route, then try launching without loading a save.
Remastered’s published PC requirements specify Windows 11. One player’s operating-system update anecdote does not establish a safe reason to reinstall Windows or a guarantee for an unsupported configuration. Compare your machine with the official requirements.
Optional Steam-only reported workaround
The linked September 29–October 4 thread reports successes and failures after renaming the game installation’s bin\ddi\Steam.dll to Steam.dll.disabled. If you choose to test it, first verify you are inside this game’s Steam installation and that this exact file exists. Close the game and launcher, keep the original recoverable, then make only this one change.
If it does not help, restore the original filename and verify files again. Restore it before future updates or unrelated troubleshooting. Do not rename system DLLs, delete whole installation folders, or apply the path to GOG, Epic, Battle.net or console versions. We have not reproduced this workaround or established its effect on every Steam integration feature.
If launch still fails
Report what changed and whether the menu ever appeared. For a game that launches but cannot save or load, use the PC save/load guide instead. For old Nexus installations, see compatibility checks. Several players in the thread also had unmodded failures, so the symptom alone does not prove that mods caused it.
