Start at the dye merchant by eastern Beauclair’s harbor in Toussaint. The legacy Blood and Wine system uses consumable dyes and a dye remover. Dye changes color; Remastered Reforge changes the equipment appearance. Neither is a reason to expect higher combat statistics.
Find dyes without chasing every formula
Look for the beach area with pools of colored liquid and workers. Check the merchant’s actual stock and price before planning a full recolor. The historical guide reports expensive individual dyes; it does not establish a guaranteed current price or every color’s availability on every visit.
Buying a usable dye is the direct route when you need one color now. Crafting is a separate route that requires the corresponding formula and ingredients. A dye formula is not itself a consumable dye.
Preview before using the consumable
- Keep a save before spending a scarce dye.
- Choose the armor piece and inspect the available dye interaction in your current inventory.
- Preview the result where the interface allows it.
- Apply the dye, or use dye remover when you want the original color.
The cited 2016 guide restricts dye use to Witcher armor. Check the current item’s interaction rather than assuming every relic, cosmetic skin or modded item supports the same system. We have not independently tested a broader 5.x eligibility rule.
Color versus skin
If you want a different armor model rather than a different color, read Reforge and old-save skins. If you want another school’s combat bonuses, compare the equipment roles. This distinction prevents spending dyes to solve a missing appearance or crafting-stat problem that recoloring cannot address.
