How to play Gwent in The Witcher 3: rounds, passing and your first deck

Build a playable Witcher 3 Gwent deck, understand passing and shared hand resources, and practice winning two rounds without spending every strong card early.

Win the match, not every turn

Win two rounds while conserving your hand across the match. Passing gives up further turns in that round. A huge first-round score can still leave you without enough cards to win the next two.

Build a deck you can actually play

The legacy tutorial describes a minimum of 22 unit cards, with special cards counted separately. Begin with Northern Realms and strengthen that deck as you acquire cards; splitting scarce early improvements between every faction makes comparison harder.

Before starting, inspect the selected faction, leader and cards in the active deck. Owning a card in the inventory is different from putting it into that deck. Read the card ability rather than judging only its printed strength.

A practical first-match routine

  1. At the initial draw, inspect your hand and use the offered redraws for cards that do not help the match.
  2. Watch the opponent’s remaining hand as well as the score. Compare how many cards you each spend for a small point lead.
  3. If the opponent overcommits, consider passing and preserving resources. Do not sacrifice a round if you already cannot afford another loss.
  4. Use spy cards when available to gain cards, and check weather effects on both sides before playing them.
  5. Keep enough strength or recovery for the final round instead of emptying your hand to win the first by a huge margin.

Improve before a one-time tournament

Practice with ordinary merchants and buy useful cards when their stock offers them. After a loss, compare the hand sizes at the end of each round; that often explains more than one high-strength enemy card. No tactic here guarantees every match.

Before story-linked tournaments, use the missable card checklist and keep a manual save. Gwent difficulty, deck strength and console modded-save achievements are different checks.
